To find your school or institution's Canvas URL, begin typing the name of your school/institution. Results will appear after you type at least 3 characters. For best results be as specific as possible. If you can't find your school, try using any part of your school's name or searching for your school district or state. You may also need to search for the school using the acronym or full name, for example "USU" and "Utah State University".

Hello Canvas Community, and thank you for joining me to check out the updates and new features for our September 19 release! I’m going to review everything you see listed on the screen, but if you want more details, or have any questions, you can join our community by visiting Now, let’s jump right in and check out these new features! Feature Action Script - Narration Calendar - Recurring Events -Open Course Settings -Open Feature Options -Open Calendar -Create New Event -Click the More Options button -Click repeat checkbox -Show Every drop-down menu -Click the Count checkbox -Create Event -Show Repeated events on Calendar Let’s get started by looking at a great new feature that has been added by popular request: Recurring Calendar Events. This new feature option is located in the Course Settings and must be enabled by an admin before it can be used at the course level. Recurring Calendar Events allows instructors to create a new calendar event for a course and duplicate the same event multiple times. To access this new feature, select an existing event or create a new one on your Calendar. After adding event details, click the More Options button. The repeat button appears as part of the new calendar event. An event can be duplicated every day, week, or month, and you can specify the number of occurrences. The Count option will add a cascading number to the end of each event title. Once created, recurring events are not linked together and are treated as independent events. Any modifications to an event must be made to an individual event. Conferences - Polling Now let’s take a look at our next great new feature, for conference. Presenters can now create polls for participants during a conference. Polls can be created ahead of time, and integrated into a presentation, or they can be created as part of an informal discussion. Presenters can create a poll at the bottom of the presentation window, in a variety of formats. An especially interesting feature is that polls can be created automatically from a presentation slide! Conferences will read the slide and automatically include polling choices that match the options on the slide! Remember that if you want more details about this exciting new feature, you can find them by looking at our comprehensive release notes. Groups - Conclude Groups at Course Conclusion -Open Courses & Groups -Click the View All Groups Link -Show Current & Previous Groups And the last new feature to mention is that when a course concludes in Canvas, groups in the course also conclude. Concluded groups will not appear in the Courses & Groups menu, but users can still access their previous and current groups from the Groups page. Now let’s take a look at some updated features. Gradebook - Muted Assignments -Open Gradebook -Mute Assignment -Show Warning in Total Column When an instructor mutes an assignment, scores are muted from the student’s Total score, but not the instructor’s Gradebook. When an instructor mutes an assignment in the Gradebook, the Total column will display a warning indicating that the total score is different than what is shown to students. New Canvas UI - Admin Navigation -Enable new UI -In Global Nav, click Admin Link -View All Accounts link For institutions using the new Canvas UI, we have some new features for you. Admins now have a link to manage all their accounts in the Admin link. The All Accounts link shows the accounts page New Canvas UI - Login Page Layout -Enable new UI -Show Login Page When the new Canvas UI is enabled, the Canvas login page also has a new layout, which allows for customization in the Theme Editor. Theme Editor - Login Customization -Open Theme Editor Click Login heading -Show customization options In the Theme Editor, admins can customize elements of the login page for their institution. Currently the login page cannot be edited directly in the Theme Editor. To see login changes, apply the theme editor changes and then log out of Canvas. Theme Editor - Subaccounts -Open Accounts -Open Subaccounts -Show Theme Editor button As another added bonus, the Theme Editor is now available for all subaccounts! But keep in mind that this button only appears on subaccount pages if the subaccount functionality is enabled at the account level. SpeedGrader - Manual Quiz Question Grading -Open SpeedGrader (for a quiz) -Click in a manually graded field -See the dashes disappear! And our last update to mention is about Speedgrader. If you’re an instructor who manually grades quiz questions on a regular basis, the dashes in the grading field are removed automatically. So you no longer have to delete them before entering a grade. That's all we have for you in this new feature screencast, and remember, the detailed release notes can be found at Also, be sure to visit if you’re interested in taking a deeper dive into Canvas by attending one of our free CanvasLIVE webinars that we offer a couple times each month.
