Batch upload on canvas

Jump to solution

Hi. I'm trying to export exam questions from McGraw-Hill Connect and import them to Canvas. Is there a way to batch upload ("transfer questions at once")? Or do we have to transfer individual questions manually?

Good evening,  @jyoon76 ...

I'm not sure what kind of file formats McGraw Hill may offer, but they may be able to send you (or you may be able to obtain) a *.imscc file that might work to batch upload quiz questions into Canvas.  One thing I always make sure to check (when I am working on quizzes for our faculty) is if they have copyright permission from the publisher to upload questions into another system such as Canvas.  This Guide, How do I import content from Common Cartridge into Canvas?, may help.

Also, since you mentioned batch uploading of questions...a while back I wrote a blog post on the subject...but it does require the purchase of some software.  You can read more here: Batch Uploading Quiz Questions with Respondus.

I hope this information will be of help to you, Julia.  Please let Community members know if you have any other questions about this...thanks!

Respondus and ExamView solutions are dead ends.

All we need is the format Canvas expects of bulk question files, such as: https://www.csustan.edu/sites/default/files/blackboard/FacultyHelp/Documents/UploadingQuestions.pdf,

https://help.blackboard.com/Learn/Instructor/Original/Tests_Pools_Surveys/Orig_Reuse_Questions/Uploa...

Instructure could provide the imscc header and footer syntax too. This will give many Canvas creators/instructors/teachers the interoperability functions we so need!

I can comment more, please reply here with questions or comments. I've been asking for this functionality since 2017!

Your link to Canvas How-to: You do not have sufficient privileges for this resource or its parent to perform this action.

Hi there, @ronmarx ...

Thanks for letting me know those links weren't working properly.  That was a result of some links not re-directly properly after Instructure changed Community platforms last Summer.  I've edited my posting to correct those links, so they should both work now.

Here's a little bit of a hint for you...if you happen to find other links that give you an "insufficient privileges" or similar error, you can usually use the search field at the top of Community pages to type in the name of the Guide, discussion topic, resource, etc., and it should find it fairly quickly.  🙂

I hope this helps a bit!
