Can I really copy a Quiz from another course???

Jump to solution

I am confused. "Duplicate, Clone, or Copy anything in Canvas" is listed as "Done" in 2017, but in a chat just a few weeks ago I was told I cannot copy a Quiz from another course. What's the truth? My work around is to post the Quiz to be copied to "Commons" then I can import it into another course, which is not too much trouble.

Hi  @djohnso2  and  Welcome to the Canvas Community!

If you are using the classic Quiz tool, you can definitely copy a quiz form another course using the import content option:

How do I select specific content as part of a course import?

If you are using Quizzes.Next here are some resources that might help:

How do I migrate a Canvas quiz to Quizzes.Next?

How do I import questions from a QTI package into an item bank in Quizzes.Next?

You 100% can copy a quiz from one course to another.  Here's how I do it:

  1. Go to the course where I want the quiz to show up.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Choose Import Content on the right.
  4. For Content Type, choose "Copy a Canvas course."
  5. Select the course that contains the quiz you wish to copy.
  6. This step is super important: Choose "Selected content" not "All content."
  7. Click Import.
  8. In a moment you will see a row appear beneath the Import button you clicked. On the right it will have a Select Content button. Click that.
  9. A window will pop up letting you select elements of your course. On the left side of the window are black arrows. Clicking a black arrow will expand that item. In this case, click the black arrow next to "Quizzes."
  10. Check the box for whichever quiz you want to import.
  11. Click the Import button.

The two biggest things I see people miss is using the black arrow in the import selection screen and choosing "Selected content" instead of "All content."

Thanks! Very helpful. I wish the Chat person I talked to at CANVAS weeks ago had know about this. It would have saved me lots of work.

Hi Dave,

On behalf of our company I apologize for the negative experience you had interacting with our Support team.  I will call this thread to their attention so they can work with the agent you chatted with to update their understanding on this issue.  Sorry, again.
