Change a Student's Email

How do I change a student's email address? Canvas has attached an email to the wrong student. This has happened more than once. However, once it has done this there doesn't seem to be a way to give the email back to the right student. How do I resolve this?

Generally speaking, teachers will not have any ability to edit settings on students' accounts.

Are you using the "Free for Teachers" Canvas, or Canvas from your school where an administrator might be able to make changes?

In the free version, students log into Canvas with their email addresses--that's the way users are identified--so it's hard to see how an email address could get "attached to the wrong student"?   Can you describe in a little more detail what is happening and you are seeing?

Not sure what actually happened. My best guess is that one set of students

left the computer lab without logging out and another student using their

computer gave me their email address. I sent them an invitation to join and

when they hit "get started," it took them to the already open student's

Canvas account. They clicked "accept" which required them to create new

login credentials. The reason why I think this is because if I look at the

student's email address in Canvas, it shows the right names associated with

the right addresses. However, if I try to send a invitation to the student

that I believe left without logging out, it automatically associates with

(in my theory), the student that came after them. This continues to happen

even if I delete the malfunctioning Canvas account and start all over

again. Apparently, once Canvas associates you with an email, it doesn't

like to let go!

Anyway, that's my theory.

You can't really "delete the malfunctioning Canvas account"--that account belongs to the student, not to you, and is separate from the course.  You can remove the student from your course, but the student's Canvas account still exists, under their email address.

If you look at the student's email address in Canvas and it "shows the right names associated with the right addresses", what indication do you have that the email address is somehow associated with the wrong student?

An invitation to join the course goes to the student's email address, and to the Canvas account under their email address.
