This is a UX bug.
When a graded discussion has checkpoints enabled, the discussion assignment itself does not have a due date (even though there are due dates for the reply to topic and reply entry).
This causes problems in two important areas: The SpeedGrader view of the discussion indicates it does not have a due date. More important, the Grades page assumes that the graded discussion does not have a due date. When sorting by date, the reply to topic reply entry dates are ignored even though they appear on the page.
The Modules and Syllabus pages are okay.
The best solution is the first due date should appear in these two places.
This screenshot shows the bug with a red circle indicating where the due date is missing:
I reported this to Instructure support and received case number 13015843.
I also encountered this issue and had several students contact me regarding the lack of a due date.
Hi @ProfessorBeyrer,
I know that your question was related to dates but I came across another UX bug with graded discussions with checkpoints
When in the gradebook history (as described at https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-view-the-history-of-all-grading-changes...) and filtering by a specific artifact (a graded discussion with checkpoints enabled) there are no entries when filtering the results.
The reason is because:

P.S. I reported this to Canvas Support and the case is 13077909.
