Course Summary in Syllabus

I'm making my syllabus. I have what I need in the rich content editor. However, below there is a "Course Summary," which looks like a complete mess. I don't need students to see every single assignment/quiz/etc... in the course. Is there any way to remove this?

This is what shows up below my rich content editor, and I'd like to get rid of it, but there is no edit button to delete it.

Hi, Cody, et al,

I wanted to help clarify some often-misunderstood information about the Course Summary feature in the Canvas Syllabus page. It's a great tool to help students with time management, similar to the Calendar feature. Many instructors are somewhat reluctant to use the Course Summary, however, because it "looks like a complete mess" and because they're concerned students may head straight into the assignments without interacting with the module content first.

Two things to know:

  1. My accessibility-specialist friends have told me the Course Summary feature is more screen reader-friendly than the Calendar feature.
  2. As Adam mentioned, as the instructor you'll see the "mess" of your Course Summary but if you use Student View, you'll see it the way students will.
NOTE: if an assignment is published but not yet open, students will see it (and can plan for it in their schedule) but won't be able to get into it until it's unlocked.

For students who don't realize the Course Summary doesn't include all the module elements, I suggest putting something like this right above the Course Summary section:

"The Course Summary below is a chronological list of assignments to help you keep track of due dates. It does NOT contain links to course learning materials. Please access the course materials through Modules."

It seems a shame to take away a time management tool that can be valuable to many students (at least, the ones who are serious about their coursework =-)). Instead you may want to do what you can to encourage the most effective use of the tool. Good luck!

When you click the Syllabus link from the course menu the Course Syllabus page displays.  In the top right corner of the page click the Edit button.  Once the page loads, there is a checkbox for Show Course Summary.  If you don't want this displayed uncheck this checkbox and then click the Update Syllabus button in the bottom right corner of the page.
