Course level admin role - unable to enable!

Hello there,

I am attempting to set a specific admin role. I cannot enable 'view all grades' - see image attached, the role is called Student Analytics.

Essentially, I would like to create a role that allows someone to be able to access course analytics and grades, but nothing else (such as all the menu options - files, discussions, etc.)

Why can I not enable view all grades?

Hi @pmason 

Granularity of permissions has always been limited in Canvas, and we have never understood why certain permissions were grouped the way they were!

You will need to look at the Roles and Permissions chapter of the Admin Guide to better understand them, specifically, What user roles and permissions are available in Canvas?.

The Canvas Permissions PDF is also very useful.

Bottom line, what you want is not available, but you could create a new Idea Conversation for this functionality in this community.

@pmason in addition to what @kmeeusen provided, it looks like you are creating a course specific role and cloned it off the "student" role.  You may want to consider one of two other options.  Course roles are going to be people enrolled in the course so your Analytics Admin would need to be enrolled in the course they are looking at.  Not sure if that is what you want or not but that is how course roles work.  If you look next to the "Course Roles" tab is an "Account Role" that may be more what you want.  These are setup at the account/sub-account level and then could see all info across all courses at that level.

If you are truly going for a course role then you do not want to clone off the student.  These roles are subtractive not additive meaning you can't give a student more power/options but you could create like a TA and remove options.  A student can't look at other students' grades or course analytics so that can't be added to a student role, hence why they show as greyed out.
