Disconnected in middle of exam

Jump to solution

Hello Everyone,

My apologies if this question has been posted elsewhere.  I could not find an answer to this within my search.

The Question:

What happens to a student's exam if the student gets disconnected in the middle of the exam?  Could the student log back in and start from where they were previously?  Or, if the student was disconnected, would whatever answer they had be automatically submitted?  If there was only 1 attempt allowed, could the student even log in after the connection issue?

Thank you!

Yes, they can log right back in where they left off. Canvas saves the answers to each question as you go. However if there is time limit on the test, it will continue to count down and will auto-submit whatever questions they did answer at the end of the time limit.

We just learned from support that free-form/essay responses are not saved automatically. The auto-save only applies to discrete response item types. If that is true, it is a gap that will have an adverse impact on a student's ability to continue to test after a lost connection. Re-answering multiple choice questions if far less of a challenge that rewriting an essay.

Following on from Matthew's advice, if the time has run out before the student manages to log back in then you can use the "Moderate" option to let them have an extra attempt: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-2979

If the available until date/time has come and gone, students cannot continue with the exam where they left off even if they should still have X number of minutes left.

So once that exam is auto-submitted after timing out, what can be done?  It looks like the only "solution" is to give that student a second attempt at the whole exam, one that he/she may already have seen and answered a majority of the questions from, thus giving this person what amounts to a do-over on those already answered questions, thus giving this student a very unfair advantage of over his/her fellow students. In other words, this LMS is so primitive that the only "fix" is to give the student another unfair bite at the apple, is that what you're saying?
