Hello,
I wanted to bring to your attention a performance issue that instructors at my college have reported with the recently redesigned Discussions feature. During a recent Q&A session, an instructor mentioned that when a discussion has a large number of replies, the page experiences some lag time when the threads are expanded, and it struggles to load the content. We tested and found that there is indeed some lag time while the page loads a discussion with many responses.
This issue seems to be new, as instructors did not report this issue in the previous version of Discussions. While collapsing threads with many replies could be a potential workaround, it's important to note that the system should be capable of loading predominantly text-based information quickly, even with all threads expanded.
It would be helpful to investigate this performance issue and work towards finding a solution. Ensuring that Discussions can handle a high volume of replies without compromising the user experience is crucial for fostering engaging and productive conversations within courses.
Thank you for your attention.
Best regards,
Cheryl
I have also seen this behavior. I cleared my cookies and cache and was able to replicate.

I'm a lowly student have already submitted a ticket to Canvas last week ( no reply )
I can't even do my assignments the page loads so poorly.
I just got to this thread after googling. I am trying to do an assignment right now, and it's so incredibly laggy that I cannot load the replies. It's really frustrating. The new design is horrible and makes it nearly impossible to actually use.
HEY @DeletedUser ! Are you actually reading these, or are you just ignoring them and hoping that they'll go away? I see you're going to "archive" this Discussion Topic on Monday, October 21, 2024. My guess is you're just going to ignore them.
The reason we switched to Canvas from Blackboard is because they stopped listening to their customers and users, and the product became so bloated and unusable that we didn't feel like we had a choice. This feels eerily familiar.
Sorry I'm not sure why I'm being tagged here. I'm just an IT guy. I just recently logged in to the Canvas forums to check out some KB's and troubleshooting guides. Seems something weird is going on with my account.
@Instructure clock is ticking eh? Now that summer term is ending and fall term is starting, your userbase is probably up, what, 10x? You can't hide this mistake much longer.
The discussion page is UNUSABLE in its current state.
Please change the fonts back so replies to replies are more clearly readable and distinguishable from parent replies.
Please FIX the AWFUL lag on this page.
@DeletedUser It's honestly pretty bad. I checked everything I could on my end- my PC is not struggling, my internet is extremely fast, I have problems with nothing else. It makes it very very difficult to read my classmates replies and participate in discussions overall! Sometimes it won't let me scroll at all.

Was there ever a fix for this? We still experience a lag when students are trying to post a reply to a very large discussion.
