Essay answers in Speed Grader cut off or partially missing

Jump to solution

Hello,

I'm having the issue of essay answers from students being cut off or partially missing in Speed Grader (see below for example, at the end "are re.....").  I've tried viewing from two different web browsers with no luck.  Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Is this a copy/paste issue?  Does it make a difference if students type directly in the essay text box or copy/paste from a Word or other document?  I also understand that there isn't a word limit, and so, this probably isn't the cause.

Thank you!

Hello there, @apadams ...

I am sorry to see that your question has been sitting out here for such a long time without a response.  The issue you show here sure doesn't look like normal Canvas behavior.  Have you reached out to the Canvas Help Desk to see if they might be able to help troubleshoot this with you more?  If not, I would recommend that you do so.  You can contact them by following the information in this Guide: How do I get help with Canvas as an instructor? - Canvas Community.  Please let us know the outcome of that conversation once you've had a chance to discuss this more with the Help Desk folks...thanks!

The submission is a .docx file, submitted in speedgrader. I'm running current Firefox. Only a third of the document is showing, with no indication that there should be more to it. The document has images and text, and the document is not damaged in any way.

Since I generally have trusted speedgrader, I gave the student 33% on the assignment because that's all that was submitted.

The student replies back that they did all the work! Lo and behold, if I download the document and open it in Word, the whole document is there. Grade fixed, moving on.

However, the real problem is that this undermines trust in the speedgrader. Rather than trust what I see on the screen, I need to download all files and open them locally, so I am not erroneously punishing students for a canvas issue.

There are no errors in the HTML. The page returned successfully and the

I've had this issue rarely, but it has happened for a few years now. I'm still having this issue today, 10/15/2021.

This is the takeaway:

1. Speedgrader is not trustworthy. If speedgrader has an error displaying a piece of work, it should report this to the instructor so additional action can be taken.

Good afternoon, @hornungp ...

Have you talked with the Canvas Help Desk folks about this strange behavior in the SpeedGrader?  If not, I would highly recommend that you do that...so they can get a ticket created.  It is possible that they might have to send your case to their software engineers to see if there is anything out of the ordinary occurring with certain submissions.  If you do contact the Help Desk, please come back to this thread to provide an update for us so that we know the status and if you were able to find a resolution.

How do I get help with Canvas as an instructor?

Looking forward to hearing back from you soon on this!  Good luck!

Hello again, @hornungp ...

I just happened to stumble across a similar topic, and it seems to address the same issue that you are having.  Looks like Instructure (the folks that make Canvas) is aware of the issue and are taking steps to fix it.  Here's the thread in case you want to look at it: Solved: Speedgrader not showing all pages of Word docs - Instructure Community.

Ok, but how will we ever know if/when this issue is acknowledged by Instructure? Or how can we know when if/when it is fixed? I'm not aware of any bug tracker system for canvas.
