Gradebook Recording "Wrong" Score

I allow students to take their pre-class quizzes twice and record the highest grade. At least I thought I did. Instead, the interaction with the late policy means that if they retake a quiz after the deadline, and get a higher score, the late deduction wipes out their previous score. Not exactly what I intended. Is there a solution?
