Hide pdf download link from students?

Jump to solution

Hello,

In order to better be able to monitor our students' activity time online, we would like to have the ability to prevent the student from downloading our instructional pdf's within our modules. Is there a way, from the student point of view, to just have the "Box" pdf document viewer onscreen without the download link also displayed? And for that matter can it be applied to any file within a course we would want to restrict from student download? Thanks for any help.

If you can shift to embedding the instructional PDFs in Pages or other rich content, a Restricting file downloads  technique shared by  @canvas_admin  can work to allow preview only.  Doing this may also help indirectly with reading time being more accurately reflected in analytics.

(Caveat: a tech-savvy student will likely be able to reverse-engineer a download URL, just by comparing file IDs in the Page source with download URLs they see elsewhere.)

Feel free to add additional use cases for " modifiedtitle="true" title="Make a file read-only but Not Downloadable in Canvas, which remains open for comments as of this writing.  Also see this archived idea:

Hi Robert,

So far as I know this is not possible. Even if you restrict the access for the file the download link still appears when the box viewer opens.
