How to open a linked file rather than pointing to it

I uploaded my syllabus.  I linked the file to the "syllabus", my homepage and one or two other places.  When I click on any of those links it takes me to a place to download the file.  How can I get it to open the syllabus file rather than point to it?

Hello there, @slswirsk ...

I am sorry to see that your question has been sitting out here in the Canvas Community since the end of last May without a response.  Let's see if we can find an answer for you.  If you are still using the current Rich Content Editor (RCE), then you'll be able to follow the instructions in this Guide until next Saturday, January 16th:

How do I set the auto-open for inline preview for ... - Canvas Community

After January 16, 2021 ... all schools will be using the New RCE.  In that case, you'll need to follow the directions outlined in this Guide:

How do I embed documents from Canvas in the New Ri... - Canvas Community

Specifically, scroll down to the section called "View Link Options" toward the bottom of that document which will tell you how to open an in-line view of the file in your course.

I hope this information will be of help to you.  Sing out if you have any other questions.  Take care, stay safe, and be well.
