I'm not sure if you are referring to the global navigation buttons on the left side of your Canvas screen or your course navigation menu items within your Canvas course. In either case, you can toggle these on/off whenever you want. For the global navigation buttons, there is an arrow with a vertical line at the bottom left corner of your Canvas screen to click on. For the course navigation buttons, there is an icon that looks like three horizontal lines ("hamburger" icon) in at the top left corner once inside a course.
