Question About How the Gradebook Works for Non-Submitted Assignments

In the Canvas Gradebook Settings, there is a setting called Automatically Apply Grade for Missing Submissions.  If you check this box, there is a box below which allows you to put in a grade for missing submissions.  In Canvas,  as it is now, if a student DOES NOT do an assignment, a hyphen "—" remains in the instructor's gradebook for that assignment.  When calculating a students cumulative grade, Canvas inexplicably ignore cells with a hyphen in them completely and does not factor those missed assignments into the grade.  To get an accurate grade representation, the instructor must change those hyphens to "0", which is a laborious process for the instructor.  I was told that the setting I mentioned above, with a 0 in the box for missing assignments, would automatically populate the 0 into the assignment grade, thus obviating the need for me to do so.

Well, I have turned on that setting but it seems to be doing nothing like I was told it would do.  I still have to manually enter the zeroes across all missing assignments.  Am I missing something here?  Am I doing this wrong?   Just what does that setting do, and is there a way to effect the result I am seeking? (not having to put in all the 0's myself).  Any help here is most appreciated.  Syd Rabin

@Sydney_Rabin There are a few notes at the top of the guide for  How do I apply a Missing Submission policy in the Gradebook?, so I'm going to share it here and ask you to take a look. A few of the caveats are to 1) ensure the due date is in the past, 2) make sure the submission type is online, and 3) late submissions will change the application of grade from missing to late....

If you look through the guide and you still can't get it to apply correctly, let us know - may have you submit through support.
