Student Access After Term - Institutional Policy Question

We're relatively new to Canvas.  Last semester, we had all students lose access to their class a few weeks after the term.  Then, we manually placed students with an incomplete into new sections that had later access dates.  It was a bit of a pain to manage.

Do most institutions grant access to class long after the term has ended?  I worry that students will have too many old classes show up on their dashboard when starting their next semester.

I work in a state system of 34 community and technical colleges, and for ten years served on their eLearning council. As far as I know, none of the colleges in our system permit student access after term-end except on an as-needed basis. However, many of us do permit teachers to extend the end dates of their courses to accommodate situations like incompletes.
