Student has two accounts with same email

I have a student who somehow managed to sign up for a teacher account after accepting the invitation to join our section as a student. She is now stuck in teacher mode and can't log in to our class. I tried deactivating and removing her from our section, and when I added her back in, her email address does bring up two affiliated accounts--one with her name, and one with a string of anonymous numbers.
Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas about how to fix this?
