I am attempting to have my sub-account admins add some users to a course via email address instead of SIS ID. Their attempt errors out because Canvas can't find a match for that user. When I (as a site admin) do this, I get a little check box beside the user's name (see attachment) that I can check and hit next and then it goes ahead and adds them. The sub-admins do NOT get this check box and therefore can't add the users.
I tried to talk to support and he couldn't tell me how to resolve this. He wasn't saying you can't, just that he couldn't find any info on it. Then he postulated that if we verified the email address first, they could probably add them then, but he couldn't tell me how to do that either. ("they just go into their email and find the email from Canvas and click Verify"...ok....how did Canvas know to send them an email?? He couldn't find any information on that either...:-( )
Can anyone offer advice on either of these situations?
Hello @brewerg ...
Do the people that are being added to these courses already have user accounts in the Canvas environment? In my past role as a Canvas administrator, I sometimes ran into the issue where I was trying to manually add someone via e-mail address to a course, but it could not find the user...even though I knew the e-mail address was correct and I knew they were a user in our Canvas environment. Instead, I added the person to the course via their Login ID (not the SIS ID). This worked, and the person was able to access the course. It was easy enough to do this because the Login ID was the first part of their assigned school e-mail address (everything before the @ symbol). Not sure if this might work as a solution for you and your colleagues, but it might be worth considering.
Regarding the people you are trying to add, have they accessed their own Canvas accounts? They need to verify their email addresses by clicking on Account and then Settings. Look to the right side to find the email address. If there is an exclamation point (!), the email has not been "verified." I think you click on it to verify it, and Canvas will send a message to the email account. The user then goes to the email account and follows the instructions in the email there.
If the email is verified, you should see a star next to it.
