Using a pre-test to skip a module based on score

Jump to solution

Is there a way to have students take a pre-test that would allow them to skip a module based on their score?

We have students taking our courses as credit recovery where they only need to complete areas of deficiency in order to receive credit for the entire course.  The previous curriculum we were using made the students take a pre-test and based on a students pre-test score, they were allowed to bypass a prerequisite module based on their pre-test score.  So a student scores well on the unit 1 pre-test, they can move on to unit 2 without completing unit 1 assignments or tests.

We have switched to building our own courses in Canvas and would like to have the same pre-testing option for our credit recovery students.  We do not want to remove the prerequisite requirements from the modules because it is still important for a student to complete the course sequentially for areas that they do not test proficient on the pre-test.  Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to accomplish this process?  I appreciate your guidance.

You may need to adapt this, but it can be done if you can define two key events.  In a module, they can "complete" it by having a series of requirements, and you can set it so they only need to complete one of the requirements - so passing score on pre-test, or a passing score on module test.

Then you'd set the next module to not be available until they complete the previous module.

This page outlines the various clicks to do this:

How do I add requirements to a Module?

Here's an example of a mockup I did.  I don't have a post-test in the module, so I had to select something else to be the second requirement.

Hope that helps!Capture.PNG
