Vimeo Channel and Filter

Jump to solution

I was wondering if any one has experienced their school's network fitter blocking Canvas' vimeo tutorials.  I'm a digital learning specialist and my job is to support teachers with their use of Canvas in the classroom. I have designed a training course (in Canvas) with links to specific Canvas tutorials but unfortunately our filter at school blocks the videos.  It's great content and would love to use it but teachers and students cannot access it at school. I've worked with our network people and changing our filter is not an option.  Any suggestions?

Unless you can get all of the faculty and students using a VPN (unlikely and probably likely to get you in hot water) I don't think this will solve the problem.

What you could do is download the Vimeo videos from home or somewhere else you are able to access them rather than linking to them. Then include them in the course as native content. See the screenshot below for where the download button is on the Canvas Vimeo tutorials. The only other option I can think of is to recreate the videos which would take more time but allow you to customize them to your schools circumstances and branding.

Hi Emily,

If changing the filter or adding an exception is not possible, the only thing I can think of is to use a proxy. VPN (Virtual Private Network) Service - Fast & secure - Hide My Ass! VPN has a free web proxy (under tools & contact) you could try. The website was designed for the exact reason you are citing, so hopefully it will work.

Hope this helps,

Josh

Hey Emily,

I don't have experience with the site Josh referenced but in your shoes I'd definitely be careful about possibly violating your institution's policy with respect to safe sites and VPNs.  I do know of other people in similar situations who download our videos from Vimeo and then host them internally.
