The checkmark designation usually means that your instructor has set a particular assignment to be graded as either "Complete" or "Incomplete".  You can read more about this in this Guide: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10478-4212136679 (check out the section on "Grading Types" about half-way down the page).
