Why is there not access to files in Google Drive through the ePortfolio?

I am working with our high school English teachers to have students create an ePortfolio as a repository of their "best" work throughout the four years here. In setting the ePortfolio up I noticed that students are not able to access files that are in their Google Drive. There is not a Google Drive icon in the Rich Text Content nor is there an attachment when looking through Course Submission. I am hoping that someone is able to direct me to a suggestion other than having students download from their Drive to their Computer just to upload back to Canvas. Seems like extra work when their Google Drive is integrated with their Canvas courses to begin with. Any and all assistance, guidance, suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry for your frustration with google Drive/ePortfolios. I have pretty limited use of ePortfolios, but I just tested this and can see what you are talking about. I did a quick search of the Community and, surprisingly, couldn't find where this has come up before. Smiley Sad

My first thought as a workaround is to have your students create a sharable link from the web version of their google drive and put that in their ePortfolio. I can see why this won't work and be a little "clunky", though. With that said, I'm going to share this with the K-12‌ group to see if anyone over there has any ideas.

Not sure if this helps. But I asked Canvas developers about eportfolio at InstructureCon last year. They said the existing features were designed for an existing customer and they had no plans to add anything new. Sounded like it was a bit of an orphaned feature. If a third party wanted to develop it, that would be cool.

I was going to say the same thing  @amariano . When we looked into this a couple of years ago, our CSM and technical implementation team told us the same thing.

With what I have learned over the last few years is that Instructure focuses on the core LMS and making sure it does its job EXTREMELY well. They then provide thorough integration points for companies that want to do more with the learning management system. While Instructure focuses on the core, the third-parties can focus on specialising in addon applications such as ePorfolios, exam proctoring and plagiarism detection (to name a few).

The best example I have seen of this is with the new plagiarism detection framework that Instructure has been working on with various partners, creating deeper and richer integrations points, while ensuring that the third party tools can do what they do best, through specialisation.


I would therefore recommend looking at tools that integrate with Canvas as a next possible avenue as there are numerous parties that have ePortfolio tools that integrate well. A good first point would be to check out the Canvas Partners Portal Instructure | Instructure Partners
