"Not Graded" and "Publish Later" show up in Gradebook Summary??

In 'Student View', I am seeing rows for "Not Graded" and "Publish Later"? Are my student's seeing this? If so, how do I make those go away? Students are likely to see "Not Graded" and think there are assignments still to be graded that they have not yet received points for - and assignments that were never meant to be part of a student's grade do not belong in the Gradebook. My currently 'unpublished' assignments are those that I may or may not end up giving to students this semester. One can only imagine what students will make of that when looking at there grades.

Hi  @kimberly_smith1  - Yes, they sure are seeing those, as well, and those reflect any assignment groups that you have on the assignments page within your Canvas course site.  I can't recall where this is explicitly pointed out in the instructor's online lessons, but it is definitely pointed out in the student's here:  How do I view my grades in a current course? under the View Assignment Groups heading.  This applies even if you are not using weighted grades and even if the assignment group is empty and/or contains unpublished material.

The best suggestion I can give to you is to move all of the assignments that are currently in any groups you do not want to see to a more appropriate assignment group, as covered here: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-13342-4152807365

Thank you for responding. I have added an "Admin Only" assignment group, moved those assignments into that group, and deleted the (now) empty groups. But it does not make sense to me that Canvas would intentionally allow students to see things in my course that remain unpublished. I find this Canvas behavior disappointing - especially since it was not just the assignments that were unpublished, but the Assignment Groups themselves.

 @kimberly_smith1 , greetings! To be clear, students are not able to see unpublished assignments, discussions, quizzes, pages, etc. What students ARE seeing are the names of your assignment groups. Assignment groups can't be unpublished, so no, there is no way to hide them from students.

Hi again  @kimberly_smith1  - To add to Kona's reply, what I suggest to my own faculty is place any future/unpublished assignments into their proper assignments groups.  I realize you have some for "Admin Only," but as Kona states those cannot be seen by students, anyway.  When I have done similar things in courses that are going out to multiple faculty members, I will just title the pages so that ADMIN ONLY is the first word in the page title, such as:  ADMIN ONLY-Attendance Policies or things like that, and then place it within the PARTICIPATION group, for example.

I considered doing that instead - before deleting those assignment groups. However, each of those regular groups have a group Rule to 'drop lowest x scores'. So, I was concerned that moving an ungraded assignment into a one of those groups would impact that calculation. Is this not the case? Thank you.

Hi  @kimberly_smith1  - Ungraded can mean a couple of different things, so double-checked both possibilities.  First, an assignment with the "Do not count towards final grade" will not affect that rule at all. I tested this just now on a sample class. 

On the other hand, if you are indeed speaking of using "Ungraded" from the Display grade as drop-down menu, those assignments do not show up in the gradebook at all, so it definitely will not affect things there.  Hope this helps.
