"Pipe" classlist into survey as choice

Jump to solution

When creating a survey or other type of information-gathering tool, is there a way to pipe in the classlist (students, instructors, section, etc.) so that a question can be asked to "select your name from the list" or have the survey automatically know who is signed in so that their information is populated in the output of the survey.

For example, I am trying to create a survey that will permit students to sign up for the week in which they would be willing to serve as the moderator for the discussion. This would be two separate surveys as the course includes weekly group discussions as well as weekly class discussions. A student does not, necessarily, need to moderate the class discussion the same week as they moderate the group discussion.

Is this "piping" possible?

Hi  @matthias_5  - I can tell you from previous experience--when a faculty member wanted a good way for students to assess one another's teammates in a team-based learning course--that there is no way to do this within the survey/quiz instrument that is built-in with Canvas.  The faculty member wound up laboriously typing in all of the various names into a drop-down menu to do this.  Fortunately, the class size was only(!) 20 students or so.

But--maybe--there may be good news on the horizon.  If your institution has a subscription to the Qualtrics survey instrument, I see from a recent email sent to administrators that Qualtrics and Canvas are set to unveil a new LTI.  I do NOT know if what you want will be possible at all even with Qualtrics built-in as an LTI, but it may be worth investigating if your institution has Qualtrics already.  There is some additional information here:

Qualtrics does allow piping within a survey, so it would be interesting to see if it can actually find information from a class list.
