Canvas by Instructure Release Notes (Android 5.2)

In this Canvas by Instructure update users can create course nicknames. The app also includes updates to Discussions, Files, and the Calendar.


Download the Canvas by Instructure app in the Play Store. Version 5.2 requires Android 4.0.3 or later.

Course Nicknames

Users can create nicknames for their courses to help them organize their courses on the Dashboard. Course nicknames appear in the Dashboard, course navigation menus, and notification emails. A course nickname does not affect the course name at the account or course level; it only changes the name of the course for the individual user who created the nickname.




  Updated Features




Editable Discussion Headers

Discussion headers (main discussion topic) can be edited after being posted. This functionality only applies for the user who created the discussion.



File Downloads

In addition to the existing ability to view files, users can download files in the app by tapping and holding the name of the file.




Course Colors in Calendar List

When selecting calendars to view, course colors are represented in the dot next to the calendar name.

Issues with LTI Launches from android app.  Current version crashes when we launch.  Previous version was causing the full browser view of the canvas website inside of the iframe area instead of just the content of the LTI.   Timely notification of update would be helpful as we would be able to test and catch issues faster.

Our support team hasn't received any reports of any crashes with LTI tools in the Android app. If you wouldn't mind would you please open your app and access the help section? There is an option called Report a Problem, and if you'll do that and mention the information here, they'll be able to get more details about your account to help them troubleshoot the issue.

I did reach out to the mobile support and our customer service rep.  I just got an email from the mobile support person that they have a fix to this known problem and are testing and waiting for the App Store to approve its release.  They were very responsive to this issue.
