The module feature will make it much easier for student to progress through the modules on an iOS device. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I just downloaded this, and I'm not seeing the NEXT or PREVIOUS icons in a course that has Modules.  (And I'm logged in using a student account.)  Anyone else having this issue??  (For the record, I also recently updated to iOS 9.3 on my device.)

Excited to see support for multiple-grading periods in the app!

So happy there (will be) a NEXT and PREVIOUS. @kblack , I ran the updater too on my iPhone and verified the version under my Profile in the app and it's not working yet for me too.  Going to restart my phone a couple times but would love to hear a confirmation of someone that has seen this feature.

Hi all,

It looks like there is a current issue where the Next and Previous buttons are conflicting with the sharing function in modules. Some devices have one working where the other is not. Our support team is working on it!

Thanks,

Erin

I updated to iOS 9.3, and the 3.13 app, and I have the previous and next buttons (iPhone form factor--haven't checked an iPad yet--suspect that it may not have the previous and next buttons because of the sidebar index being consistently visible?), but I did notice that the buttons aren't there for external URL items, and there's no way to navigate past the external URL items except to go back to the index for the module and select the next item from there. This makes navigating modules pretty confusing and inconsistent.

On an unrelated note, (and I know this didn't happen on this release, but I'm not sure when it changed), why has the app gone to Times Roman for content font? Every time I see it, I think, "Why isn't the style sheet loading correctly?" since Times Roman is usually the default font on a browser.

Hi, Tom,

If you haven't already, please file a support ticket so our team can have some more data as they troubleshoot.

Thank you,

Erin

The update has caused an uproar from our teachers in that files posted to modules can no longer be opened or exported.  We've submitted this issue to support and were given this response:

With the last release users can no longer download files embedded in Modules.

If this is also affecting you, please let support know.

Hi, all,

Our iOS engineers are currently working on a fix for the modules behavior and will release it as quickly as they can.

Thanks!

Good to hear as we reported an issue with inability to download files from the app earlier today and were told it was currently not a known issue.

We reported this issue this morning as well- hopefully they will get a fix ASAP.  Our graduate students all use the app on their iPads and have find;s in a week, so really need access ASAP.

It still has issues with graphics not scaling to fit the viewport.  This started with the previous update, and it still has not been fixed.

Hi, Joseph,

Our support team does not read the release notes, so the best way to make sure something is being considered with the app is to make sure you've file a support ticket. That's the best route to take in making sure (1) our engineers know about something and (2) getting behaviors resolved. Smiley Happy

Thanks,

Erin

How do I file a support ticket?

carlinjm

Thanks.  I did that with the last release, and our IT department said they escalated it, but I have no way of following the ticket, nor any way of knowing how widespread the problem is.  It's tough being a minion.

You should be able to bug the IT department to check on the status of the ticket and you most likely can ask them to add you as a CC on the ticket so you get updates immediately without having to ask them to relay the information.

Have the issues with iOS 9.3 and the updated Canvas app been resolved yet?  I would like to know before I send out a general communication about the latest features in the app.

After seeing  @jazemlya 's comment, I logged in this morning to check...but I'm still not seeing the NEXT or PREVIOUS icons on the iPad.  So I wonder if that's still being worked on....

Can you confirm that there has been a fix added for the "App Crashing" problem?  Canvas support updated one of our parent tickets stating "Our engineers have added an update to this latest version to keep the app from timing out and crashing as you attempt to access various course contents. You should no longer run into this issue once you have updated to version 3.13.0."  We have several parents, students, and teachers who have experienced the App Crashing problem.  Since it's not listed in the RN above, I just want to double-check before I ask them to upgrade.  Thanks!

Hi, Mary Ann,

The joy of working with the iTunes store is we have to wait for Apple to actually approve the build with the fix in it. When it's out you'll get an update in the app, and we also post an update here.

Thanks,

Erin

Hi, Mary,

There is an existing crash that affects the assignments list, which is part of the 3.13.1 release (currently pending with Apple). However, this crash you've mentioned is a separate issue, which will be part of the next release (either 3.13.2 or 3.14, depending on whether it includes features or just bug fixes).

Thanks,

Erin

I'm on iOS 9.3 and i am seeing the next previous buttons on my Canvas app.   However i have only checked this on my phone and not the IPad.

tom_gibbons

I can see the buttons on both devices (iOS 9.3 on iPad Air and iPhone 6s Plus), but only if it's native Canvas content.

External URL content doesn't have the buttons, yet.

Hi, everyone,

Canvas iOS 3.13.1 has been pushed to the iTunes store. If the update hasn't appeared on your device yet, it should be available shortly.

Thanks,

Erin

Will this update correct the export from Canvas issue?

Hi, Kristin,

If by export you mean the sharing options available in the app, yes.

Thanks!

Actually I was referring to the recent issue that occurred with the last update- about a week ago. Students can open files in modules and view them within the app, but lost the ability to export those files from Canvas into other apps to allow for note taking, highlighting etc. We filed a ticked as this is a huge problem for our program since this occurred. So I just did the update- this update does not fix that bug- you still cannot do anything other than view files in Canvas- still cannot export files out of Canvas to use in other apps. This remains a huge problem for our program. We have 300 graduate students with iPads. We have reverted back to emailing and printing handouts over the last week after being paper free for more than 2 years. This was a huge miss on the part of Canvas. So yes you added a next button- but you made The Canvas app read only now with no functionality beyond read only. And yes I know they could access the files by leaving the app and opening in the browser on their iPads to export the files (but then why have an app).

We have 4000 high school students with iPads who were impacted by the latest Canvas app release.

Another possible workaround: expose the files directory in the course to the students (this would require faculty to lock any files that they didn't want students to access: easy enough to dump them all into a locked directory). Accessing files through the files directory in the app still allows for file download (or it did for me, anyway. I didn't do extensive testing--just a few PDFs in a single course). I know, I know--it's not a great solution and may require some significant housekeeping and structuring for some courses. But it is a way to keep students in the app rather than bouncing out to the browser version.

OR create a page in each module with links to the relevant files, and unpublish the files that are added as module objects (for now). The text links in Pages still trigger a downloadable view of the file if you tap the file name. This seems like an easier way to do it.

True those solutions would work but most of our faculty are not super Tech savvy and this would require a huge effort as we currently keep our Files hidden from students as we store info in there that needs to be shared across faculty for exams, testing etc. It would take weeks to get all of our files/courses and modules restructured to do such and we cannot do that so late in the trimester. Our bigger issue is that students are a week out from Finals now and this has created an uproar amongst them as this was a huge step backwards and most of them only have iPads and do not own computers - so this is problematic. As our new trimester starts in 2 weeks I have advised all faculty that we will need to reconstruct courses completely at this point to allow for file access for students and will need to lock files we do not want them to have access to. This does not sit well with Faculty who just spent a year transitioning and learning a system that worked very well for us. Unfortunately, we cannot leave things as is and trust Canvas will come up with a fix as we cannot start a new trimester with these access limitations.
