C4E: Subject Card Titles

Jump to solution

When C4E was first presented, one feature mentioned was that teachers would be able to nickname their course in a way that all users would see the nickname (rather than the current user-specific view). Right now, the course title on the card and in the banner pulls from the long_name field that we send over from the SIS file. This has always been a bit problematic because it overflows the card, and with the larger elementary font, this is even more exaggerated. It's also not a very friendly name for the card or the banner.

I realize we could enable the permission that allows teachers to rename their courses, but that allowance would make it near impossible for admin users to use the course search function. At the moment, I don't even see the existing nickname feature on the cards in the new UI. Is this feature forthcoming? Is there a way to pull short_name into the card title and the banner? Some cases where the fewer characters becomes a problem:

  • Related arts teachers with multiple grade levels of the same subject (ex. 6 PE cards)
  • Co teachers with more than one card for the same subject area (can't see the primary teacher's name

Here's a PE teacher who is a co teacher. On the dashboard, you can't tell who the teacher of record is for each of the 3rd and 5th grade courses:

Hi, @christopher_gil,

This is now available. Teachers should see the option for Friendly Name in their course settings. See the screenshot below for context.

Cool! Seems like a similar request to what we did with subject colors...something that in normal Canvas can be set by students, but that in C4E is set by teachers and inherited by students.

I agree Audra.  We are in the same boat and had told our teachers this was a feature that was planned to be a part of the Canvas for Elementary update.  I definitely hope that's the case!  Our SIS naming is quite long and clunky as well, and our specialist teachers end up with courses named exactly the same.  If Canvas can roll out the feature as promised, we would be delighted 🙂

@audra_agnelly and @hdyksen1, we have created a ticket for our engineering team to work on this as it is something that we would still like to make available. We will keep you updated in our weekly updates and will also update documentation as soon as this is made available.

I was thinking teachers could add nickname in "classic Dashboard" and then switch to C4E view, but that does not seem to stick.

Def. hoping for an update for sure.

@jsailor Is there a permission associated with "friendly name"? I was prepping an announcement and just noticed that field is not enabled for teachers.

@jsailor & @audra_agnelly - We are having the same permission issue. Admin can change "Friendly Name" but teachers do not have access.

I went back to check, it seems teachers cannot adjust that nickname, it does not even show for them.

Perhaps there is a permission in Admin settings?

Hi All,

This was inadvertently tied to the permission for changing course name/code. We have a fix ready to go for this. We will update soon with a date for which this will be live so that teachers can adjust the friendly name regardless of if they have this permission or not as the friendly name is different from the course name/code that comes from the SIS.
