This week Jody and I review a couple of questions from the focus group and talk about what the teams are actively working on.
As a Canvas admin quite often I get questions from my teachers (imagine that!).
I use my account to create screencasts and take screen shots to help answer the question. i like to use my account rather than masquerading as a teacher because then I can use it for other teachers and I don't have to worry about sharing something that another teacher isn't aware that I'm sharing.
If my dashboard is "stuck" to reflect the Canvas for Elementary feature I have lost that ability to create a general screenshot/screencast that I can share with multiple teachers. Now my screenshots/screencasts have to be edited to blur out sensitive information (especially student information) and that takes a lot of time I'd rather spend on supporting teachers.
Hopefully that makes sense.
I support teachers with instructional technology K-12, so the ability to view both types of dashboards would be of benefit to me. Also, we have some specialist teachers, such as music teachers, that work at more then one level, such as both elementary and middle school. That is another scenario where being able to switch between views would be helpful. Thanks for all your are doing!
As an admin it's beneficial to see both dashboard but meantime for testing purposes I can get around that by having a specific user account at a sub account that has this feature enabled so that my current dashboard is not affected.
Also after looking around I noticed that the Canvas for Elementary dashboard does not have the Start a New Course" option, at my district all teachers have this option. I noticed they can still create a course by going through Course then All Courses but everyone is used to this option on the dashboard.
A few other thing teacher can select multiple homeroom courses- there is no limit? What if multiple teachers have a homeroom course? There seems to be no control/limit and the students dashboard gets overtaken by Homeroom courses.
I noticed on my dashboard as an admin that I no longer have the ability to manually add courses either as @ysmalls mentioned.
As a district admin, not all our sub-accounts will have Canvas for elementary enabled. However, if it enabled for one my dashboard is automatically in that mode. Would it be possible to have the option to switch between the two. Right now because I am testing the new dashboard I have to go in to the test sub-account I created and shut it off and on every time I go in to work with the new dashboard. Is this something that could be a possibility?
I also agree with the above mentioned about starting a new course from the dashboard when in elementary dashboard.
@rebecca_esplin @hdyksen1 @ysmalls @rebecca_esplin @jessica_gutierr -- Makes sense to me! I bet we can come up with some way to toggle between the two dashboards for admins. I'll report back. (I guess a bonus of switching between the two in the short term would also be regaining the ability to manually add a new course from the old dashboard.)
