  • Use the data from evaluations and surveys to inform faculty reviews
  • Monitor Learning Outcomes for courses and programs
  • Respond to assessment/accreditation requirements
  • Fulfill a wide variety of other reporting needs

“I have a question about Canvas. Do you have a sec?” said any Canvas user at some point in his/her life.

Many of us know there are multiple ways to apply the tools and leverage the features in Canvas. Despite having almost thousands of pages of official guide documentation and 33K+ posts in Q&A, we still rely heavily on our colleagues and other community members for real-time support.

Can you spare an hour?

We initially asked this question of our Canvas Advocates. And we were overwhelmed with their initial responses! Many of them found times in their already-busy schedules to commit to future virtual office hours, free to anyone in the community. In fact, as of this posting, over 20 hours of open virtual office time have been scheduled through July 31, 2020!

Some office hours are audience-specific (i.e. for admins or teachers). Some are platform-specific, like mobile. Others are people-specific. I mean, who wouldn’t want to 'Jabber with Jenna' or talk all-things-Canvas with Beth?

We are thankful to our Canvas Advocates who are setting a great example. Click here to check out all of the upcoming virtual office hours.

Can community members host virtual office hours?

Yes. YES. YASSSS! We would love that! In fact, we welcome any hour you can provide in support of each other. Schedule your office hours when it’s most convenient for you (even if that means 5am or 10pm). We are a global community, after all.

Click for steps on hosting your CanvasLIVE event

NOTE: There are no naming conventions for ‘event title’ (but be sure to select ‘office hours’ under event type so members can easily filter by and find an event.) Title your office hours however you wish (i.e., “Bob’s Office Hours”, “Teacher Office Hours”, “Open Lab for All”) -- you get the idea!

But what if I don’t have the answers?

** News flash** We don’t always have all the answers, either!

Seriously, don’t feel like you have to duplicate Canvas support. We want you to be there to help answer questions to the best of your ability, point people to resources and guides in the community, and help users make progress towards their goals (even if that means helping them create a support ticket.)

“Answering questions and solving problems is a key to my own professional development. If I do not know the answer, I take the time to explore the possibilities during the session,” encourages professorbeyrer@gmail.com, Canvas Advocate who has already hosted over 40 virtual office hours in the Canvas community since 2017. “Through those interactions, I have discovered new ways of doing things and hopefully helped others.”

Any tips?

There isn’t a right or wrong way to host virtual office hours. But if you want to avoid being “Zoom-bombed” or ensure you don’t share the wrong screen, here are a few suggestions:

  • Use video conferencing technology with which you are most familiar. People should be able to hear and see you, clearly. Ensure that participants can join easily and securely, if possible (i.e. enable waiting room in Zoom, know how to kick people out who aren’t appropriate, etc.)
  • Stay online the entire time. Even if no one shows up, keep your event open the entire scheduled time. You never know who might show up later in the session. Multi-task if you wish, but don’t end early.
  • Share the time with a colleague. If you don’t want to go at it alone, tag-team with another colleague. At least, if no one shows up, you have some time to catch up. Smiley Wink
  • Double-book with your school. If you already host virtual office hours at your school, consider opening up one of those sessions to the wider Canvas community. (Or vice versa - if you’re hosting an event here, let your faculty know, as well.)
  • Avoid recording the session. These sessions are not meant for public consumption. People are coming to seek help in real-time (and sometimes that’s easier than articulating their question as a Q&A). Respect their privacy.

Some faculty are developing new Canvas courses. Other Canvas admins are helping schools wrap up their semesters. Sometimes all we need is to talk through our Canvas journey with a friendly face.

Keep helping each other!

Description

This session includes two 15-minute presentations with time for Q&A.

Group Discussions for Increasing Interaction, Engagement, and Equity
Whole-class discussions can be difficult to follow with multiple conversations happening at once. Some students dominate and others get lost in the mix. Many participate with minimal replies. The presenter will demonstrate how she uses Canvas Groups and Discussions to create more intimate discourse. The result is a more equitable and engaging student-to-student interaction.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1) Recognize the benefits of group work online
2) Create Canvas group discussions

Data at Your Fingertips: Supporting the Success of all Learners
How are students engaging in your course? Enter Analytics Beta, a visual dashboard that provides instructors an in-depth look at how students are engaging at any point in time. Hear how one instructor has used this tool to support students by making informed pedagogical and design choices, as well as provide critical communication when students need it most. Data at work!

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1) Identify at least one Analytics Beta feature/function that supports student learning success
2) Identify at least one Analytics Beta feature/function that supports the instructor role.

Description

Your institution is committed to student success and informed decision making, but your current process and tools may make it hard to capture and analyze the data. So ask yourself: Do your faculty and administration have all of the information they need, delivered seamlessly? Or could your institution’s goals be better served by an all-in-one course evaluation and survey system that’s uniquely integrated with Canvas?

In this webinar, we will share why so many Canvas institutions have entrusted these critical processes to EvaluationKIT by Watermark, and the key benefits of our solution from great response rates to streamlined administration to robust reporting.

You’ll see examples from some of our partner institutions, such as Baylor University, and discover how you, too, can improve the course evaluation and survey process for students, faculty, and administrators.

Summer is an ideal time to implement a new course evaluation system, so you won’t want to miss this chance to learn more about our unique solution for Canvas institutions.

The holidays are just around the corner and what better way to spend the downtime then binge-watching InstructureCon 2018‌ session recordings! (We doubt there's this level of professional development on Netflix.)

Of course, there are 130+ sessions from which to choose! This makes it a bit challenging to know which video to start. So, we created the following playlist purely based on two metrics: play rate (videos that were clicked and played) and engagement rate (% of the video watched). Based on this analysis, the TOP 20 videos were determined.

How do accreditation teams determine whether regular and substantive interaction is happening in on-line courses? Evidence suggests that different teams may have very different ideas about how to do this. Let’s talk about how we might be able to add some structure and equality to that process, and how we can ensure that the ACCJC gets what they need while protecting the privacy rights of faculty and students.

Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will understand what the ACCJC is looking for in terms of R&S contact and ways it can be achieved.

Interactive Media Through Arc

Wednesday, July 18, 2018

Noon PT / 3:00 p.m. ET

Meeting virtually via BlueJeans

Instructure says its media hosting platform, Arc, is "the end of passive video." A university in Idaho that has been using Arc almost since its debut in late 2016 can attest that the slogan is true.

With Arc, faculty and students alike can record from their webcam or create a screen capture. The resulting video files will automatically import into Canvas for sharing with others. Screencasts also have a built-in editing suite that appears once the video is complete. With both types of recordings, owners can enable, edit, and publish automatic captions.

No webcam? No problem. Just enter the URL for a YouTube video.

Here's where Arc provides real value: students may enter comments and questions at specific points of the videos, and faculty can see analytics to learn who has watched the videos, and for how long.

On July 18, Jesse Buchholz of Northwest Nazarene University will demonstrate Arc's many features. Join us for an informative session about a solution that can bring true interactivity to your online (or face-to-face) courses.

Participants are coming from all over Europe (Netherlands and United Kingdom, so far!) with a focus on K12 (school and FE) education technology, but representatives from local HE providers (such as University of Wolverhampton, University of Birmingham) will share their insights into how Canvas is used by their staff and students, too.

Agenda (or Objectives)

We will discuss onboarding, enbracing culture change, supporting staff and students that are techphobic, and demonstrating how teaching practice can be made more efficient and effective through CanvasLMS. We will help each other get to grips with technical aspects such as embedding iFrames and using apps within Canvas.

CanvasLIVE event will be actually LIVE - in person!  Participation is free of charge with a delicious lunch provided. We will be ready to welcome you at 9am with departure at approx. 3pm. Check out our beautiful campus and get directions to us: Bromsgrove School - Outstanding Education. CanvasDataViewer is used to automatically download Canvas Data files into a SQL Server database where you can query and analyze the information. In this webinar you can get a guided tour of CanvasDataViewer and find what it takes to set it up and host it.

Project Description

Our project is used to automatically download Canvas Data files into a SQL Server database where you can query and analyze the information. Canvas Data files are very large--currently a full download includes at least one file for each of 82+ tables, and some tables require more than one file. For a large campus each daily download can include more than 8GB of files that contain millions of database records. Manually downloading Canvas Data files from the Canvas web interface and loading them into a database can take hours. Our CanvasDataViewer automates this process. When set up with a SQL job agent to run the process at night, you can come to work every morning with fresh Canvas Data waiting for you to analyze.

Who will find this useful?

We think the most likely use case will be campuses that want to evaluate the Canvas Data product as a source of information for teachers and program managers. When schools implement a long-term Canvas Data program they will most likely want to purchase a license for a hosted data repository like Amazon Redshift that can automatically accept Canvas Data. CanvasDataViewer may be suitable for long-term use--we have built the system to download the latest data schema from Canvas and built the database table to suit.

(Due to popular demand, we are offering this encore presentation of the Tuesday, July 18, 2017 event.)
