Catalog Release Notes (2019-12-21)

In this Catalog release, the Course Listings tabs include an updated design. Small enhancements have also been made within the details, certificate, and program requirements tabs.

Catalog release notes indicate features and updates that are currently available in the Catalog beta environment. These updates will be available in production environments on the date indicated by the release notes.

Catalog currently has a scheduled beta environment refresh process, and beta environments will be updated twice before the production release. Please see 2019 Catalog Beta Environment Refresh Schedule

Canvas Catalog is an all-in-one learning solution that integrates with the Canvas LMS as a course registration system, payment gateway, and learning platform. Learn more about Canvas Catalog.

Updated Features

Course Listing Details Tab Design Update

The Details tab within a program includes an updated design. Additionally, all fields include validation and display error messaging if a required field is not completed.

Additional enhancements:

  • The Enrollment fee field includes an enhancement to hide the “Free” banner that displays for courses with no enrollment fee. Previously the banner always displayed in the listing.
  • The Rich Content Editor is keyboard accessible and displays a shortcuts menu.
  • The Image field also includes support for alt text; an option also exists for identifying the image as a decorative image where alt text is not necessary.
  • The Tags field displays existing tags.

Certificate Tab Design Update

The Certificate tab within both listings and programs includes an updated design. Additionally, certificates can include an expiration date. This feature supports institutions who require a course or program recertification after a specific period of time. Expiration dates can be set as an actual date, or it can display the number of days the certificate is valid.

Not really digging that UI change. The old one was more .. together? Also, it seems like it no longer auto-populates a listing path. We add about 300 - 500 listings a semester and this just increased the time for data entry to the annoying side.

Also .. it used to display the date of the event on Catalog .. now it's self-paced or time to complete which screws over our face to face sessions. So I guess we will submit a ticket.

I see what you mean by not filling in the listing path. Can you please send me your ticket number so I can create one about this as well? Also, there is no back to course anymore. I see the self-paced and also, starts on X. But, what do you mean by time to complete?

I don't see "Starts on X" .. I was referring to days to complete (Time Limit) which is under the teaser.

It used to have a date range on the catalog entry based on the dates in the course setting or section. That is no longer possible? I'm assuming.

I guess you will need to put the information into the description. I will add this to my ticket with support.

Canvas support is adding it to an engineering ticket.

Both of Ian's concerns are present on my end as well. The second bug is highly problematic as course dates really need to be on the catalog main page for users.

  • no autopopulating listing path
  • Unable to create a Catalog listing with a date (all listings are shown as "Self-paced" or "X days to complete)

An idea would be to put the start and end date in the description or the title of the course so at least it is visible. If a listing path is already available it will through an error when saving but otherwise you can use any combination. The course cards on the storefront show X days to complete or self-paced but you can still have sections for a course.

I agree, the UI change is less functional than it was before. I also don't like the preview being pushed to the bottom instead of being alongside the edits as you scroll. I am also not sure why it says started May 15th, 2019. I am guessing it has to do with course settings on Canvas but I feel like being able to edit the start date here would be much more intuitive.ListingPreviewAtBottom

Hi, Daulton,

Yes, one of the recent changes is to rely on course dates. See the update blog from our product manager:
