Log in for Community?

(You all have been so great to answer my questions! We are just getting started with implementation and learning a lot!)

And so another question -- Does a user have to be logged into a Canvas system in order to log into this Canvas Communities site?

My personal accounts are probably a bit messed up, since we piloted and I used different usernames/emails, but for me, when I go to log into this communities site, I have to log into our Canvas first, then hit the Log In for Canvas Community. Then it says "Oops, we can't log you in automatically", and I pick our institutional site from the drop down, and it logs me in just fine. (Hope that make sense!)

The reason I am asking -- I am recommending to our faculty (who don't have accounts yet in our Canvas system -- we are moving toward SIS integration, but not there yet) to browse or join the community to learn more about Canvas.  

Will they be able to log into Canvas community if they don't have an account in a Canvas system?

The Community uses the authentication of any instance of Canvas.  So if you've already logged into Canvas, you just need to select which institution you're from, but otherwise it will send you back to your Canvas instance to log in, then jump into the community.  Those faculty without accounts could create an account at the Free for Teachers Canvas instance (Canvas.instructure.com), but then they may have an issue later because they would then have two accounts.

I think I do have two account in this Community, but I am using the same one consistently now.  How do I get rid of the other one?

kburkes,  @abunag ‌ has given you some awesome advice. I wanted to make sure that you had this resource handy to use when you explain the authentication process to your faculty members: How do I log into the Community with my Canvas Account? 

Also, keep in mind your learners can freely browse the Community content without authenticating; for example, they can navigate through the Guides and Find Answers space without logging in. However, if they want to interact with the resources (comment, "like," or create) they will need to log in first.

I'm in agreement with both  @abunag ‌ and stefaniesanders‌ here.  I also wanted to let you know that I am going to move your question into the https://community.canvaslms.com/groups/community here in the Canvas Community website.  This group is a place that's specific to how things work here in the Community.  I hope that moving your topic there is okay with you.
