What is the Canvas release schedule for beta, production, and test environments?

Instructure is committed to consistently improving the Canvas user experience. Our cloud-based platform allows us to maintain an agile production cycle and provide users with bug fixes, enhancements, and new features in three Canvas environments: beta, production, and test. All Canvas environments are also available on any mobile app; just use the appropriate Canvas URL.

Beta and Production updates are outlined in Canvas Product Release Notes.

The beta environment allows admins and instructors to explore the most recent Canvas features before they reach production. The beta environment is overwritten with data from the production environment every Saturday*. Any work or content added to the beta environment will be overwritten every week.

Additionally, every three weeks, new code is placed in the beta environment. Features mentioned in Release Notes: Canvas‌ may be available for advanced viewing in the beta environment.
Canvas release notes are distributed every three weeks on the following Mondays* (unless otherwise specified):

  • 25 February 2019
  • 18 March 2019
  • 8 April 2019
  • 29 April 2019
  • 20 May 2019
  • 10 June 2019
  • 1 July 2019

The production environment is the live, working environment where users interact with Canvas every day. Every three weeks, new code is placed in the production environment as indicated in the release notes for the current release, posted inRelease Notes: Canvas. Changes to the production environment include new features, updates to existing features, or new or updated APIs.

The production release takes place every three weeks on the following Saturdays* (unless otherwise specified):

  • 8 December 2018
  • 5 January 2019
  • 26 January 2019
  • 16 February 2019
  • 9 March 2019
  • 30 March 2019
  • 20 April 2019
  • 11 May 2019
  • 1 June 2019
  • 22 June 2019
  • 13 July 2019
  • 3 August 2019
  • 24 August 2019
  • 14 September 2019
  • 5 October 2019
  • 26 October 2019
  • 16 November 2019
  • 7 December 2019

Every three weeks after the production release, the test environment is overwritten with data from the production environment (which also includes the new and updated features from the beta environment) and allows you to test your real data without compromising any user content.

The test environment is updated on the same Saturdays as indicated for the production environment (unless otherwise specified).
