"view ungraded as zero" as default for teachers and students

I'm the Canvas administrator at a university and we want to leave this option enabled as the "default."

Hi @WAGNERCOSTA,

First, just to be super clear, the "treat ungraded as 0" only affects the teacher view of the gradebook.  It has absolutely no affect for students.  We actually have the feature turned off entirely because of the confusion the feature causes around grades, especially when final grades are reported to our SIS and students receive lower grades that they expected from their view of Canvas in some courses.

With that said, there is no single switch I know of to enable this by default for all courses.  I think you'd have to make a template course with this turned on there, and set that template to your account default.  New courses created after doing that should inherit the setting, but existing courses would not be changed.

Although it is something that only generates a visual effect, it is a really necessary resource for my scenario.

Could you send me an example of code that, if inserted into my theme, would enable this option for everyone?

Hi @WAGNERCOSTA,

I'll move this over to the developers group area where there are more CSS/JS experts, but I don't think this is going to be something easily done with css/js via a theme.  Just again to be super clear, there is not really any way to enable this to be effective for student viewing at all.

You could use grade posting policies to give students a 0 for "missing" (after the due date) work, or have teachers set all of the grades to 0, which would give this sort of view to students permanently, but I honestly think that could cause more confusion all around about what grade a student was currently getting, depending on the class setup.
