As the title says. If I've created a new rubric, published it, attached it to an assignment, and realize that instead of totaling 45 points it's showing 44 because I mistyped a score value. When I click on Edit, I am 100% unable to change or edit any values.
This is new in the "enhancement" and is, quite frankly, insane.
I often, when developing a course, will base a rubric from an old one. I'll select it under "find a rubric," then click edit and change what needs to be changed, and go merrily on my way. Not now. Additionally, the "cannot change it because it's attached to an assignment" is a ridiculous limitation. After a SINGLE QUARTER the rubrics are all attached to assignments; this means that once we create a rubric and attach it, we can never adjust it, even for new courses in a new quarter/semester? Why?
There have been times when, as I'm grading an newly built assignment, I realize that I need to adjust the wording on a rubric item; before the "enhanced" versions, I could go in, do that, refresh the assignment, and go on.
Not now. Not with the "enhancements."
TLDR: Why can't we adjust points set in a rubric after attaching it to an assignment? I cannot be the only instructor on the planet who needs to edit a rubric in action.
Any help appreciated.

Hi @probinson1,
I did a bit of testing for this one, and from what I ca see in my Canvas instance, the rubric points become uneditable once you have done grading with the rubric. You should be able to edit the rubric wording, points, etc at any time before you grade, but once you have graded even one student with it, editing becomes more limited. This is likely done to ensure consistency in the grading and avoid any confusion from the student side of things, but I can't say that for sure. When I tried this on my end, I did have a big warning box on the top of the rubric letting me know why I couldn't make edits:
I know you would probably like some more flexibility, though I'll say as a Canvas administrator this restriction does make some sense to me.
I hope this info helps a bit.

Hi Chris,
I guess that "once it's graded" thing doesn't fly with me, especially since we were able to make edits (with an appropriately large notice letting us know we'd likely have to regrade if we made any point changes) in the prior, UN"enhanced" system.
Thanks, though.

I just had a ticket open with L2 for this exact issue, but for wording on an Outcome that was in a rubric (already used for grading). I suggested it should be an OPTION. I understand the need to maintain historic data, but in my case, the data was fine...it was just a word needing to be changed. They told me that I would need to create a new rubric and attach that one to the assignments.
SAME! Or, as in the latest example I posted, I mistyped a point value (since I was working on an iPad and was unable to clearly see the points as typed in (only half of a number showed). In a world moving increasingly to post-PC, it's crazy that the interface is not mobile user-friendly.
Very frustrating.
Nope, it's not that. I have a rubric attached to 12 assignments, but have graded none of them yet. When I started to grade the first one, I noticed an error in the rubric. It won't let me fix it. I can only delete it (which, BTW, doesn't just remove it from the assignment, it DELETES the rubric from existence).
So, while the rubric is attached to the assignments, it has NOT been used to grade anything. And yet, it will not allow me to edit it. Thanks, Canvas, for assuming that we're all perfect and never make mistakes that need fixing.
I did the delete it, recreate it, and try re-attaching it, only to discover a new bug that I came here looking for a workaround to: my new rubric, even though it goes "low > high" when I look at it under Rubrics, goes high -> low when invoking it for grading. Yes, I tried making the rubric go "high > low" instead, hoping that it was just confused as to what is greater than what. Nope. No matter how the rubric appears under "Rubrics" I end up with a High -> Low rubric.
We've only been using Canvas for one year, and I teach online extensively. I cannot believe the crap that gets rolled out by this company. Everything new is a double surprise: SURPRISE! We've made changes without telling you, and BONUS SURPRISE! We don't really know if it works and we'll see if the problems we created for you are worth our time to fix. Yup, that's been my year so far.
I did a little more investigation and found this. According to it, you cannot edit a rubric at all if it is attached to any assignment. (again, thank you Canvas for your overestimation of my level of perfection)
So, it forces us to delete a rubric as a workaround. But, did you notice this bullet in my screenshot? "When you delete a rubric, Canvas will remove the rubric from all associated assignments in the course and remove any existing scores and assessments given using the rubric."
Are you kidding me???? We cannot edit and clearly we cannot delete (unless we catch the problem before having graded anything). If only I were perfect and made no mistakes, ever. If only.
for what it's worth, our institution is fairly new to Canvas and I only have a fleeting experience with the old rubrics, so I don't remember how it worked in this case. But how the enhanced rubrics work now is similar to how Blackboard always was. I would often walk teachers through duplicating a rubric to make changes to the copied version, then removing the old one and adding the new one to the assignment. That does work here, not ideal, but at least you can still accomplish the task this way.
I tried doing that, or what we used to do to make that happen. "Find" a rubric close to what I need, import it into the current course, hit "edit," and move on. I was unable to edit once it was added to the assignment - which was the only way I could work on it, since "manage rubrics" took me to elsewhere and made it harder to find the newly edited one.
It's ridiculous that this still is not an option.
oooh yes, it could definitely be easier. I'm not sure about the mobile interface, I've found adding/editing content is not always available on the apps, but on the website I think a good habit would be to go to the Rubrics page in the course nav for any edits. If it doesn't let you edit, make a duplicate, edit the duplicate, then go back to the assignment and switch to the new rubric. 🙂
I was going to suggest duplicating the rubric and adding the copy to the assignment. Definitely could be easier to just edit the rubric but this is the best workaround to add the extra point value.
The only downside is that if you graded multiple assignments with the original rubric, it doesn't save once you add the copied rubric but you can record the grades before switching rubrics.
