I wish that students who drop a course were still ABLE to have their names and work listed everywhere in Canvas (depending on whether the professor checks a box allowing it).  Here's why:

(a) It reminds the teacher that this student was once here.

(b)  It prevents confusion about how many ACTIVE students have submitted an assignment.

(c)  It also could be set up to enable us to know more easily the "last attend date" for an online-only student (which the federal government requires us college professors to figure out), by seeing (in a less roundabout way that I currently have to use in Canvas) the date when this student last participated.

(d)  It could be structured by Canvas so as to enable us to screen out such a student's statistics from our "Quiz and Item Analysis" (under "Reports"), if we want to.

(e)  It could be set up so as to enable us to see what a student's grades were at the time when he/she dropped out of the class (just in case there's ever a controversy about what was going on when the student dropped out).  (For example, a student who is cheating or plagiarizing, under the current Canvas system, could simply drop the class, thereby erasing all evidence that he/she ever cheated/plagiarized!)
