Adding Grade Level & Student Role in users.csv file for Import Uploads

To no offense toward the “mechanics” of the system, however, would it not be a valuable option in a K-12 LMS robust tool, to include the role and grade level on the users.csv when uploading a number of students at one time, rather than having this “grade level” function be handled one student at a time? This “grade level” option is a field that is pulled directly from the SIS Facts/RenWeb and I would presume if working between SIS platforms, be a critical part to include when performing automatic uploads. If not a function now, maybe a feedback point to consider as a “in the near future” update. Thank you for your consideration.

Thanks for sharing this idea. In Canvas, roles do not attach to users; users only attain roles upon enrollment. In other words, a user can be a student in one course and a TA in another and a teacher in yet a third.

Also, if a grade level attaches directly to the user, what additional action would the Canvas admin need to take when the same user advances to the next grade level?

If we are entering Elementary to Middle School age students, I wouldn't consider their roles to be changed in different courses, except to say, Student. This would be the reason for making such a suggestion.

Additionally, if there are automatic uploads generated between SIS systems, a student's progression would presumably be updated to show their next grade level. However, as we are at the beginning stages of just "coming on board", we are discovering what would be some changes to consider as Canvas Admins for our department Implementation Team. Currently, with the manual uploads of our students using the users.csv file, we saw that it could have been easier to identify our students uploading their grade level at the same time as entering them into the system; rather than make such changes for almost 500 students.

Since we use Canvas grade reports to generate report cards, I'd like to add that having a grade level on the grade reports would make things a lot easier to include.

Any Idea that was associated with an identified theme was moved to the new Idea & Themes space. Any Idea that was not part of the move is being marked as Archived.
