In the new RCE embedded media icons are much larger and take up a huge amount of space compared to the old RCE thereby making the assignments bulky looking and less accessible to elementary age students. The older method of select text and emebed gave a more streamlined look and was much easier to use.
Here are the links to the new and old RCE assignments so you can see how clunky content created with the new RCE looks:
The new RCE media player is too limited with regards to playback speed. The previous media player allowed a user to slow down the media to .75 speed which is necessary for students to learn new content. .5 speed is too slow and the recordings are garbled when they play back making it unusable. The same goes for speeding things up: 1.25 speed is a nice challenge for the students and the media is intelligible. 1.5 speed is too fast and the sound quality is no longer musical.
The new media player is also too small in size and lacks CC capability. We have hearing impaired and LEP learners in our school who need the CC functionality!
Having to search menus for everything takes more steps which slows down the process and requires the user to have to remember more procedures. This takes more work on our part to create content.
The new RCE requires many additional steps and is in many ways counterintuitive making our jobs as educators even more difficult than they already are.
Canvas needs to allow teachers the choice of which RCE to use or, at the very least, which media player to use.
