[Gradebook Settings] Allow marks deductions for late work to be calculated based on points possible or points awarded

With the assessment late policy feature, Gradebook 2.0 removes the burden which our lecturers have to deduct the mark for late submission manually. The late submissions are identified automatically (with calculations of late hours/ days) and marks are deducted accordingly.

However, we found that the current Canvas Gradebook 2.0 late policy setting does not meet our institution policy.Canvas calculates the penalty point based on the full mark/ point possible of the assignment (Link to Gradebook 2.0 late policy) while our institution decides the penalty point are based on the awarded mark/ the mark given for each student.

An example of how our institution calculates penalty mark:
Case Note's weight is 20% of the total marks (= 20 marks point possible)
John is late for 2 days (10% per day)
John is awarded/given 15 marks.
=> Penalty = 20% of 15 marks (awarded mark), not of 20 marks (weight/ point possible of the assignment).

Suggestion: Add a switch so penalties can be calculated per institutional requirements (i.e., based on marks awarded or marks possible). The switch should be set/lockable at the account/subaccount level.

I upvote this.

If the lowest possible grade is, for example, 25%, then a late student wouldn't care whether they submit the best work or the worst, they still get 25%. Makes no sense. 😞

This seems so logical, and it was submitted in 2018.  Yet nothing has been done.  Start changing things that need changing!!!!

This would be a fantastic feature.

The way member sunwall1, describes the solution, with the penalty based on point earned and the maximum penalty based on points earned, is the only correct and fair way of using this functionality.

Disappointed to see people have been speaking up about this for year, and yet nothing? We need this like, three years ago!

We have been using the late submission feature extensively in our course for a few years now. With COVID, we've had an increase in the number of students submitting grades substantially late and we were shocked by how low some grades were because of how this automatic grade deduction works. We thought it did a % reduction of points earned rather than an absolute deduction of total points.

Please add this feature. Now we have to manually go in and fix everyone's grade or revisit our late policy to achieve a similar effect.

The current way of calculating is unduly unfair to students achieving maximum points (late)

Problem statement:

I would like to be able to deduct late penalties from the points earned rather than the total possible. If a student has a 50% deduction for lateness and scores a 50/100, they should get 25 points, not 0.

Proposed solution:

An option for late penalties: "out of points earned" vs. "out of total possible"
