Automated Academic Progress Checks

idea‌: With 1 click - have an ACADEMIC PROGRESS CHECK generated for student including current grades, absences, and instructor information/authentication. If it's possible to generate it for our students on our own, then that would be a huge bonus.

I work at a community college where full-term (Fall & Spring) is 16 weeks. I work in a student support program for special populations (e.g., Foster Youth, formerly incarcerated, UMOJA, Asian American, Pacific Islander, La Puente, DREAM, etc.). And during mid-semester around 7th week, we give out paper Academic Progress Checks to our students. ‌All programs duplicate the form so students need to only make copies for the various programs they are involved in. 

expectation‌: Students fill it out, give to their instructors to get their grades, and then come back and turn in their Academic Progress Checks. Pretty easy.

The Process: Our students fill out the sheet with the grade they "think" they are earning along with the absences they "think" they have. Once they complete that portion, students will then go to each and all of their courses and have their instructors complete the rest of the handout which includes "Student Grade to Date" and "Number of Absences".

Instructors then sign and date next to their respective course to authenticate the process.

reality‌: Students never pick up their Progress Check handouts. They also lose it and come back and ask for 5 more. They don't get all their instructors to sign. Only students who are passing or doing well turn it in. Students never  turn it in. They turn in a crumpled, stained, and folded sheet that we can barely read now. Instructors don't have any grading or assignments to gauge student progress. Handwriting from students and/or instructors are illegible. Instructors lose the form. Students not passing courses are more likely to not turn it in. 2/100 students turn it in.

Since grades are already tracked on CANVAS, our students just need to generate it for the semester and turn it in. If it's possible to generate it for our students on our own, then that would be a huge bonus.

Progress Checks are needed for probation, clearing unit counts for the following semester, financial aid, etc.

Hi,  @klokeni  Welcome to the Canvas Community! Thanks for sharing this idea; it's open for voting. It could conceivably be of interest to those schools that have a use for this form and maintain all of their students' grades for all of their courses in Canvas and consider Canvas the source of record for grading—keeping in mind that many schools use a third-party SIS and consider that to be the grade source of record.

As part of the new Ideas & Themes process, all ideas in Idea Conversations were reviewed by the Product Team. Any Idea that was associated with an identified theme was moved to the new Idea & Themes space. Any Idea that was not part of the move is being marked as Archived. This will preserve the history of the conversations while also letting Community members know that Instructure will not explore the request at this time.
