Change to "needs grading" once a missing assignment is submitted

If grade policy is set to assign a grade of zero (or whatever) to a missing submission (once due date/time is past), and student then submits the assignment late, the zero grade needs to change to "waiting to be graded" and the notation changed from "missing" to "late". This change is done in the instructor grade book but NOT in the student view of their grades.

Students who submit late get concerned that they still have a zero showing in their grades page. They email me to change the grade immediately. I will change it once I grade it.

But Canvas ought to remove the zero once the previous missing, now late, assignment is submitted.

Note the highlighted line in the screen shot below of the student's grades. The notation is changed to "late" but the zero still appears even though the assignment is no longer "missing":

YES! Please make is so the missing is removed once a grade has been posted by the teacher. An additional feature would be to put a pending status for students' submissions.

Change the status even before the teacher grades it! change it as soon as the missing assignment is submitted.

When using the Gradebook setting that auto assigns zeros to missing assignments, the zero does not go away when the assignment is turned in late. The status tag of the assignment is changed from missing to late; however, the grade is still a 0 (rather than just ungraded score).

The other awkward user interface issue is that the gradebook shows the status of the assignment as "late" and "ungraded"; but hides that there is actually a zero assigned as a grade. The student sees the zero grade and asks why they have a zero even though they turned it in.

Once a missing assignment is turned in late, and the status is modified from "missing" to "late", then the numerical grade should also be modified from Zero (0) to empty or ungraded.

It would be great that when teachers input grades in the grade book and a student has a missing assignment that has been labeled missing and has a 0 grade, or any grade, when the teacher inputs a score, its label is automatically changed to Late. The number of clicks, even with the ability to change it in speedgrader is so time consuming with 140+ students. Especially as when we are entering missing work it is generally not via speedgrader as that would take even longer.

Thank you for sharing this idea with the Instructure Community!

The Product Team reviewed all feature proposals recently, and unfortunately, this thread was identified as one that they would not be able to include in their current or future plans. While we appreciate your proposal, we also want to be transparent about the likelihood of something like this making it to production.

Thank you for collaborating, and we hope that you submit another idea in the future!
