Hi heidiadams

The feature idea process is currently on hold while it undergoes major revisions. You can learn more at Changes Coming to Canvas Community Feature Ideas  and an update at Changes are closer for Canvas Community Feature Ideas . Once the new process is in place the Community Team will evaluate your idea.

Canvas already includes a capability for users to upload user profile pictures, and you can learn more at How do I add a profile picture in my user account? The profile pics will display on your People page. There have been many requests to enlarge those pictures to make them more useful for faculty and students, and you can find one currently open for voting at https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/7588-increasing-size-of-students-pictures .

Alternately, since both student and teacher users can upload images into Canvas from a variety of sources, including cell phones, it would be very easy to simply create a Canvas page in your classroom, with perhaps a table added to frame pictures and student names, then upload the pics to that page. As a page, it can be set to permit student participation in the page. If I did this, I would then use the Redirect Tool to create a course navigation link to that page. You can learn more at this You Tube video: Canvas Redirect Tool - YouTube

I hope this helps,

KLM

May I ask what your use cases for this idea are?  What types of pictures are you uploading and who is the intended audience?  Would it be only instructors uploading pictures, or students too?  The use cases will help us further moderate this idea.

Hi Renee,

 @Renee_Carney ‌

I support many teachers in a large district- including elementary and early childhood teachers. One of the biggest things they want on their "Class Website" (this is how we are promoting Canvas to them), is a class photo page. Many have used Shutterfly, and want a place to easily upload photos of class events (like parties, field trips, in class projects, etc). The intended audience would be the parent observers and students. At this point, the need is for only instructors to upload photos. I could envision a navigation link on the left called "Photo Album" or similar. Maybe teachers could add pages to it, or even specialized photo pages that are already formatted to easliy upload and display photos (rather than a blank page). Thanks for asking!

Hi heidiadams

There are some great web-based photo album solutions that might work for you. Some of these would be easily added to a Canvas course as a course navigation menu item. I was just checking out a few.

I hope this helps.

Hello,

I support teachers who have expressed the desire to be able to generate and upload their class photos within Canvas. With the adoption of a new LMS, they do not want to learn one more tool in addition to learning Canvas. So I did not look into those options as they require a separate host site. I hope my suggestion stays in the conversation as Canvas continues to serve more K-12 populations. Thank you!

Heidi Adams  We have been asking for a feature similar to this since we began using Canvas back in 2015. We are a K-9 school and one of our teachers biggest frustration is how Canvas handles pictures. We ask our teachers to share lots of pictures, especially for our K-3 teachers who use Canvas mostly to communicate what is happening in the classroom to parents. My teachers would love the option to be able to create albums, upload more than one picture at a time, rotate pictures, and add captions. We've currently been linking to Google Photo albums or Google Slideshows as a workaround, but as Heidi mentioned, trying to teach teachers to use another tool in conjunction with Canvas isn't ideal. If this idea was to become a new feature in Canvas it would definitely help all us K12 users.

Our Product Team reviewed some of our oldest feature proposals recently, and this thread was identified as one that they would not be able to include in their current or future plans. While we appreciate your proposal, we also want to be transparent about the likelihood of something like this making it to production.

Thank you for collaborating, and we hope that you submit another idea in the future!
