We need some way to analyse high enrolment courses - sectioning could be one way, if the analytics were up to it...
Having the ability to analyze analytics by section in a cross-listed class is significant for our institution!
Panda-Cat: A mythical creature that we dreamed up to catch your attention, make you laugh, and encourage you to keep reading the explanation of our archive process for Feature Ideas
Archive: An archived Feature Idea is not dead forever, but it has been taken out of stage progression. When Community members submit feature ideas they are reviewed by the Community Team and then put to a vote by the community at large. If the idea does not receive 100 votes within 3 months it will be archived. Ideas that reach the 100 vote threshold within the first three months remain open for voting. Find more information about this process at How does the voting process work for feature ideas?
Can archived ideas still become a feature? Yes. Some feature ideas that do not receive 100 votes are resubmitted by Community members and find more supporters as people's needs change, rising more quickly to the top. Oftentimes archived feature ideas are evaluated in groups when we are preparing to refactor a particular tool or feature of Canvas and may still influence product direction.
Argh, I didn't see this waaaay too late, but we would like to see this feature implemented, please!! Our institution merges a lot of classes, and it would be helpful for both admins and instructors to have this feature exist. I hope this feature request can be put up to vote again--I'm bummed I missed its voting period.
Check out Canvas Data coming real soon to an instance near you!
@kmeeusen - I know this is way after the fact, but now that Canvas Data is a thing, can you explain how you're using it to get section analytics? I've been exploring this in relation to cross-listing, and would like to know how easy/difficult it is to do.
I wish I had an answer for you, but also "way after the fact" I am disappointed with Canvas Data - and I had such high hopes. This is not a user-friendly product unless one has a very special skill set that is not all that common in LMS Admins in our system.
There is a Community group you might be interested in though: Big Data
Many apologies, and I hope you can find the answers you need within that group.
Darn! Thanks for the answer, though.
This idea will remain in the open voting forum as an idea related to Priority: Analytics 2: Teacher & Student
*Being a related idea does not guarantee it is slated for development, instead it indicates that the idea is related to the overall scope and is being used to inform the process.
I really need this feature!
I think there are many issues currently with course analytics, though the idea of it is great. Your suggestion of being able to filter by section is a step in the right direction. The ability to filter in general should really be focused on. It would be nice to filter grades by assignment category, for one. I still for the life of me don't understand what Participation refers to. It might help if I could click on that count next to a student's name to see what they "participated in". At least you can filter by student. Anyway, rant over. Good idea!
You will probably want to follow https://community.canvaslms.com/community/ideas/analytics?sr=search&searchId=2e535160-6918-4d6b-ad8e... then!
With the release of New Analytics, instructors can filter by section. For more information, please read through the Canvas Release: New Course and User Analytics.
