Discussion Grading Notifications

Once a discussion post is graded, Canvas still needs to notify teachers that something new needs to be graded if a student submits another comment to the discussion. For example, if students receive a poor grade on a discussion and the teacher provides feedback, then the student submits something new, there is no grading notification for teachers to alert them to grade the new submission. This should work the same way it does for assignments.

Many teachers have assignments where students need their own comment and also to reply to another student's comment.

Many teachers also allow students to post a new comment or reply to their initial comment with corrections if their initial comment was incorrect.

The To Do list though only notifies for grading for the first comment they make.

We grade many discussions and are seeing that students are not following requirements more now than before. Instructors grade them as incorrect but then get no notification if the student fixes by either editing or replying to their current post which is extremely hard to keep up with. There is no reason this shouldn't be setup like any assisgnment (which it technically is) but to highlight in the gradebook and provide a notification.

This is so important! If students submit subsequent posts after grading (for additional credit), there is no way for an instructor to know that students posted additional comments without searching every student without a full score. As is, the system requires 2-3x as much work as needed and promote inequitable grading.

Comments from Instructure

As part of the new Ideas & Themes process, all ideas in Idea Conversations were reviewed by the Product Team. Any Idea that was associated with an identified theme was moved to the new Idea & Themes space. Any Idea that was not part of the move is being marked as Archived. This will preserve the history of the conversations while also letting Community members know that Instructure will not explore the request at this time.
