The ability of students to sign up in the Scheduler for past dates has caused several students to believe they are signing up for a current appointment. The fact that it is listed as "Available" with a day of the week makes them believe they are signing up for a future appointment this week. It is an easy mistake to make since, computers being what they are, this seems obvious that past appointments are not actually "available." They should show "past" or have an alert that this appointment occurs in the past, at the very least.

Based on our institution's experience, I believe aspects of this issue are considered a bug in Canvas; however, the overall topic has been up for vote before at

I feel this issue worsened as a result of the 2016-03-12 release's redesign of Scheduler Student Signup View, which was changed to list every offered timeslot on a single, Agenda-like page.

I'll be sure to vote again for this idea when it opens. For now, if your institution is affected negatively by students registering for wrong timeslots which took place already, please open a case with Canvas Support and ask to be associated with issue CNVS-20980.

This issue is a huge pain point for my users.  Allowing a student to schedule something on a date prior to the current date seems like a pretty important feature for a scheduler.  Bug or not i definitely encourage everyone to vote on this!

Did you realize you voted down, meaning we are one vote less likely to pass this change?

Really, students being able to sign up for an appointment in the past seems more like a bug than a feature request. That is, unless we're now voting on which bugs Instructure should fix first?

It was determined that this entire issue indeed was a bug, and happily the bug was fixed just a few weeks ago. See Canvas Production Release Notes (2016-09-17) > Fixed Bugs > Calendar > "Student Appointment Group Signups".

Students are no longer shown past appointments; however, their prior signups for hidden appointments still count when the appointment group defines a limit of how many appointments students can choose.  This fix has been working well at our university.
