Groups menu (global nav): show students which courses their groups relate to

It's easy for students to click on Groups to see their group memberships... but not necessarily easy to identify the group they want to go to, depending on the naming convention used.

Example:

A student might click on Groups to go to Group 1 and see a list like:

  • Group 1
  • Group A
  • Group 2
  • Group 1

The student is a member of two different group 1's from two different courses - how can they tell which is the right group to go to? They can't.

Wouldn't it be better if Canvas added the course into the list, like this:

  • Group 1

(in Course 1214)

  • Group A

(in Course 5609)

  • Group 2

(in Course 9841)

  • Group 1

(in Course 7144)

Currently, group names appear as universal to the students, the class name isn't listed on the "Groups" tab. If instructors don't include some kind of descriptor which identifies it as pertaining to a specific course or assignment it can get very confusing to understand what the group pertains to from a student's view.

Instructors frequently use generic group names like "Assignment 4: Group 4" or "Project Group 12" which gives no indication as to which class the group is for. On the student view of canvas, the main navigation bar has a selection for "Groups." Clicking it reveals the group names without the class they're associated with being listed. Students must click into the "All Groups" page in order to get this detail.

Proposed Solution: List the class each group is associated with underneath the group title to improve the usability of the sidebar.

Image shows the current student view for the first four items, then shows a proposed solution: exposing the class name under the group name. Solution printed in red text in this example.

When using the Groups pop-out menu, students see a list of their groups with no context to what course they are from. It would be useful for the students to see the course name listed under each group.
