Inaccurate "Zeros" list in the gradebook student pop-out tray

The student pop-out tray in the gradebook does not reflect all missing assignments. Please change core Canvas so that the number of zeros in the pop-out tray reflects ALL zeros labeled as "missing" in the gradebook and not only online submissions.

After collaborating with a Canvas Coach and a member of Support, I wonder if this request is a true idea or if we need to troubleshoot some settings in your gradebook. If you do not have "no submission" or "on paper" submission assignments where students haven’t submitted yet (so they are “missing” from the teacher’s perspective), but the missing label is not applied to the submission, they are not counted as missing.

Please reach out to Support so they can work with you directly and see exactly what you have in your gradebook and the settings on the assignment. Once you hear back, we can decide on a direction for this idea. How do I contact Canvas Support?

Hi Kristin,

Thank you for your response! This applies only to "no submission" or "on paper" assignments. I spoke with Canvas support initially and their recommendation was to make this request because it is not an assignment settings error, it is a core Canvas default setting that would need to be changed. So, teachers are requesting that when they mark assignments that were turned on on paper as "missing" in Canvas that those zeros also show up in the gradebook pop-out tray. I hope that helps clarify. In short: the request is that ALL assignments marked as missing in the gradebook, whether a digital Canvas assignment or an on paper or no submission assignment, would reflect as zeros in the zero tray. The Product Team reviewed all feature proposals recently, and unfortunately, this thread was identified as one that they would not be able to include in their current or future plans. While we appreciate your proposal, we also want to be transparent about the likelihood of something like this making it to production.
