[Files] Make Files Visible to Certain Sections Only

Files such as syllabi will be different for different sections. Why isn't there a way to make these visible to some sections but not others, aside from putting them into an illogical category like "assignments?"

Thank you for your submission,  @ajmickel . Fortunately, these ideas have already been submitted in previous voting cycles, but archived for different reasons:

  • <-- archived with response from product team (which means it can't be re-submitted because it's already on their radar. But please consider "following" the idea and/or adding your comments in support of it).
  •   <-- archived due to low votes. And since there is no response from product, this idea can be re-submitted.

That said, I've updated the title of your idea from "Make Files and Pages Visible to Certain Sections Only" to "Make Files Visible to Certain Sections Only" (taking out the pages part) for more clarity. By doing this, your idea is effectively a resubmission of the 2nd idea above.

Your feature idea will be open for vote from Wed. October 5, 2016 - Wed. January 4, 2017! Smiley Happy

I could be wrong, but it seems that MasteryPaths only differentiates on the basis of student performance (i.e. assignment results) and not on the basis of section, group, student path choice, or other factors. So I'm not sure how it has potential for this idea, differentiated pages, or differentiated modules.

At some point, when differentiating syllabi, files, assignments, etc., for sections, wouldn't a separate course site be more logical?

Not if most everything is the same. Course policies are the same, readings are the same, modules are the same, descriptions of assignments are the same, only the due dates of assignments are shifted. Having two course sites would make it extremely burdensome and nearly impossible to be certain that both sections are receiving the same information in the same way, all the time.

At UPenn, we have the same needs  @ajmickel  articulated for multi-section course sites to offer mostly common information with a limited amount of section differentiation.  For us, an option for certain files or folders to be section-differentiated would make a huge difference to teachers and students.

Don't forget which expresses similar although for Canvas based activities. Clear need to differentiate content for multiple classes on same course. Our staff are crying out for this....

Hi there,

Thank you for such a great discussion on this topic. We appreciate the insight shared here. At this time we will not develop this idea or make changes to Canvas in order to facilitate this idea. We will, however, take your insights under consideration for possible future projects.
