Make Hiding of Student Names in SpeedGrader/Gradebook Persistent

We have had numerous faculty attempt to utilize blind grading within Canvas and they have been disappointed by the Hide Student Names feature in the Gradebook (Grades in left nav.).  While Canvas currently supports hiding student names in the Gradebook, the feature is not persistent.  If you reload the page or navigate to a different page and return to the Gradebook, student names will reappear and compromise the anonymity of students.

Our Proposal:

Unify the Hide Student Names feature in the Speedgrader with the Hide Student names feature in the Gradebook

  • If student names are hidden in the Speedgrader, they should also be hidden in the Gradebook
  • Make the Hide Student Names feature in the gradebook persistent until manually disabled
  • Ensure that there is no way to compromise the anonymity of a student unless the Hide Student Names feature is disabled manually

@david_house , and everyone else who voted on this: even though this didn't make the 100 vote threshold, half of the idea was implemented with https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-4163

Unfortunately, that only locked the names in Speedgrader, not in Gradebook. This is an issue with our Law School and thus, they are still unable to use Quizzes for final exams.

There are 2 remaining items that need your votes to make "Anonymous Grading" truly anonymous--please upvote and tell your colleagues at other schools to do so as well before time runs out!

Note that "hide student names" in SpeedGrader is defective. It gives students ID numbers in sequence by alphabetical order of their names, and it uses the same ID numbers on every assignment. So you can still develop prejudices about the quality of work you expect from a particular ID number, and you can still guess which actual student that ID number represents.

If you want actual anonymous grading you have to use per-assignment anonymity (now in beta testing) instead. Looks the same in SpeedGrader, but actually works right, and you have to "unmute" the assignment afterward.
