For now, to-do section on Canvas app can only show assignments generated within a course by staff/professor. However, there are many individual deadlines/to-dos, for example group discussions, research deadlines, reviewing schedules, book-returning dates, etc. If it was made possible for student to add events and assignments both on web and app, and let the assignments with deadlines show in to-do section on Canvas app, managing personal schedule can be much more easier using a single app Canvas instead of having to do it else where and going through all the troubles syncing them.
