Missing Assignment Tag in Gradebook

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas

In other  Gradebooks, we have been able to enter an "M" is a student hadn't submitted an assignment.  It would read the grade as a zero.  This is similar the EX feature you already have in Canvas.  I know in the individual view I can changed all Ungraded homework to read as a zero but this isn't practical if I don't grade the homework the same day it is submitted.  My teachers only enter a zero if student was present and that's grade they earned.  If they are absent, etc an M is a great way to distinguish they are still allowed to turn in the assignment but still affects their overall grade if it isn't turned in.

:smileyinfo: We recognize that the specifically requested "M" was not implemented.  M, like EX, is not a standard symbol globally, so the feature was intentionally designed without it. EX was already in place and the decision was made not to remove it.  We do not plan to add any additional non-standard symbols.  EX actually causes a lot of confusion and problems for our international users 😞

I see that there is still no option of entering an M or anything else other than a 0 for assignments simply not turned in.  I miss that feature with our old grade system.  It was nice to quickly enter an "M" in the gradebook for missing assignment and it calculate the same as a 0% for their average.

We need an NA code, because EX does not sync to Aeries. NA will.

Individually clicking through 5 steps to add a missing assignment is not time that educators have.  If "m" doesn't work with the international community, then create a different short cut, use k, or q, or &, anything.  There has to be a way to make this user friendly for teachers, with as many districts in the US that use it!

We need shortcut keys to use for missing and exempt to speed up the process.  Being able to indicate that a student is absent in the gradebook would be very helpful as well to assure they have time to make up their work and to distinguish between being absent and just not turning in the assignment on time.

It is completely baffling to me that a feature this easy to install hasn't been taken care of in the 4 YEARS since an initial post was made to this. The way the feature is currently designed is a MAJOR time sink for teachers who are still grading physical papers and have to enter missing grades manually using the second window that opens.
